Margrét Blöndal and the enigma she creates with sculptural installation

Artist’s Biography:

Margrét Blöndal has been nominated for the Icelandic Visual Arts Award for the second time in 2008 and was selected for Manifesta 7 due to her success internationally.

Blöndal uses simple materials for her 'surprising and beautiful' installations, that often defy the overwhelming architecture of their setting. Her delicate and 'oddly atractive' assemblages, sometimes half-hidden with one work leading on to others, have been created using the simple, everyday found materials.

Since 1995, Blöndal has exhibited extensively including numerous private shows in Dublin, Rome, Basel, New York, Reykjavík and elsewhere. She has participate in group exhibitions from Chile to Poland, via Canada, Germany and several other locations in between.

Margrét always assembles her work on site and the materials she uses are as 'innocuous as can be'. Over the years, she has built up a body of work that is significant and deeply poetic.

Margrét Blöndal atttended Art School of Reykjavik, Iceland (1986 - 1989), received her BFA at The Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts (1989 - 1993) and went on to get her MFA at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University (1994-1997). Blöndal has had numerous teaching and lecturing posts. She has exhibited extensively internationally and has received numerous awards, residencies and reviews.

“The works are stepping stones around the space inside the head; hammocks on which you can sit to catch your breath ...Everything I do is based on my experience
