Contemporary art commanding high prices
The much-awaited Sotheby's auction of domestic art far exceeded expectations. The recently-held auction fetched £4.28 million, which in fact is much higher than the pre-sale estimate of £2.4-3 .4 million. At the auction, 79 percent of the lots were sold.

Art collectors defy US downturn at Sotheby's
Richard Nagy, a London dealer, said buyers were now being more selective, bidding hard for exceptional works by major artists but ignoring their "overpriced" lesser creations.
