The world is now overcrowded with biennials - from New York to Venice, from Sao Paulo to Seoul. But this one, reaching back to 1984, is different. Most are global in focus. Even the venerable "Whitney Biennial," ostensibly a biennial of American art, has aimed to be more international in recent versions. The Orange County Museum project aspires to look at the state of art in California. Never mind that it mostly ignores San Diego and essentially writes off the vast portion of the state above San Francisco. This show still provokes the question: Is there something particularly Californian about California art?
