Exhibition Description:

This show is titled after the infamous words of Karlheinz Stockhausen describing the 9/11 attacks. These words allude to the visual impact of stilled representations of major world events. They describe the split between the reality of momentous happenings and their visual representation. This exhibition explores the way that imagery of key or extreme political events can often manifest a sense of transcendence or even a beauty (intermingled with an overwhelming disgust), feelings so different to the reality of the event itself. The images in this show draw on actual events. However, they use the pictorial vocabularies of hell and damnation, heaven and salvation, and tragedy and sacrifice to re-present history in spectacular and persuasive form.
