Exhibition Description:

The Cologne artist Marina Herrmann is working on an international project called 'Locations' (StandOrte). She explores the impact of globalization on the current culture of modern architecture in cities around the world.

After having studied different cities and taking many photos, she has painted her impressions. While creating these images, so much of the original material is removed, that the viewer cannot recognize it, only the original structure and colours. Combined together – structures, architectural forms, facades, colours and patterns – reflect the temperament of a city.

First Herrmann visited Frankfurt and New York, and in the autumn of 2008 she discovered the mega-cities of Tokyo, Shanghai, Sao Paulo and Dubai. Coincidentally these are all cities, which are also centers of economy and finance, influencing the architecture, and in many cases originating from a common pool of architects. So there should be a high degree of uniformity, yet we also find a unique urban lifestyle attributable to each country.

This exhibition includes work from Tokyo and Shanghai. The images from the series 'Towers' are not flat, but are objects or picture boxes which include dimension. In the second room of the gallery Herrmann's work 'Spread over' includes small-format images with a poetic combination of pure photography and painting.
