Exhibition Description:
Fifty One Fine Art Photography will be presenting a solo show of the Korean photographer Kyungwoo Chun, titled Thousands.
The story of Thousands is as simple as it is complex. Chun (born 1969) searches for his namesakes ‘Chun’, which translates to ‘thousand’ in English. His search leads him to China and the province of Henan from where one of his ancestors emigrated to Korea about four centuries ago.
In 2006, Chun finds himself surrounded by numerous little villages where almost everybody in and around it is named Chun. Between 2006 and 2007, he succeeds in making a thousand small portraits of different people wearing his name.
Kyungwoo Chun captured the image of each of these Chuns for a minute long, so that each motion and the passing of each minute would become visible in the more or less blurred portraits. One thousand minutes in the life of these villages captured in one thousand faces.
Chun has captured the portraits without any precise details, so the viewer can concentrated on the essentials - that these are people without any reproduction of status or power. Chun then goes on to put these people back into everyday life by adding their personal data to the photographs.
The systematic approaches of conceptual art and field research culminate to represent the abundance of life, unity and diversity. Chun succeeds in linking extreme opposites in an amazingly precise way with his journey and circulation through faces and history, contrasting the continuity of time with the action of a blink of an eye. “Believing is seeing,” Chun writes.
