Artist Name: Anthony Goicolea
Dates: 5 September – 4 October 2008

Exhibition Description:

This is the first London solo exhibition by Cuban-American artist, Anthony Goicolea. The title "Related" explores Goicolea's own family history, as well as the larger themes of ritual, assimilation and alienation.

Haunch of Venison presents the latest in an ongoing series in which the artist uses drawing, photography, sculpture and installation to explore the sense of cultural dislocation faced by most immigrants, the awareness of the disjunction between a supposed mythical homeland and his estrangement from it.

In one of his sculptures, Goicolea has bisected the gallery with a three-metre long, low-lying wall made from translucent glass cast in the shape of concrete masonry blocks. Along the top of the wall, which references the sea wall running the length of Havana harbour, family portraits drawn on Mylar are obscured and sealed inside a collection of clear, hand-blown glass bottles. By creating these works, Anthony Goicolea succeeds in expressing that "strange sense of nostalgia for something I have never been a part of or experienced directly."

Description:

Anthony Goicolea was born in Brooklyn, USA in 1971 and continues to live and work there. He has for many years been known internationally for his powerful and sinister staged photographic and video works. Goicolea's work has been exhibited internationally and is held in numerous public collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY.
