Artist Name: PAUL CHIAPPE
Dates: 10 July – 9 August 2008, Private View Wednesday 9 July 6-8
Website: http://www.madder139.com

Exhibition Description:

This is the first London solo exhibition of Edinburgh artist, Paul Chiappe. He has produced a series of hyperrealist drawings which questions our illusion between subject and object.

Chiappe takes information from various settings; the traditional school photograph, books, vintage postcards, and particularly internet image searches, and alters and recreates the scrupulous and clinical precision of the camera with pencil to then blur and smudge into indeterminate plots and characters.

This detailed and definitive use of the pencil sidles with the work of Chuck Close. Differing, however, to Close and his photorealist contemporaries, Chiappe's transcribed scenes hold narratives that highlight the shifting and fragile nature of memory.

Description:

Chiappe recently exhibited at The Fleming Collection’s ‘Ten Decades’ in Mayfair, London. He will be exhibiting simultaneously at ‘Kaleidoscope’, a major exhibition of works on paper at The National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh, from 15th July – 21st September 2008, where he will be exhibiting alongside Douglas Gordon, Richard Long, Ben Nicholson and Simon Starling.
