Exhibition Title: Shirazeh Houshiary: New Work

Artist Name: Shirazeh Houshiary
Dates: 29 May – 26 July 2008
Website: http://www.lissongallery.com

Exhibition Description:

The presentation of new work by Shirazeh Houshiary includes previously unseen large-scale canvases, smaller paintings, sculpture, and a first film-based work shown on an LCD screen.

Houshiary has created seven paintings, executed on either a black or white monochromatic canvas. The surface of which is covered with the delicate markings of her pencil. Each marking represent a word, the meaning of which remains unknown, elusive, and changes with our vision over time.

These meticulous pencil traces contrast with the solid aquacryl background, creating a second surface layer that hovers in front of the viewers eyes, at the very edge of perception, like a floating veil.

The sculptural installation, includes a series of towers which have resulted from a collaboration with architect Pip Horne. These include a 2008 six-and-a-half-metre sculptural tower made of anodised blue aluminium. This will be exhibited in Lisson Gallery's new outdoor sculpture area. While two smaller towers, one pink, one turquoise, measuring just under three metres, will stand inside the gallery.

Houshiary new computer animated film entitled Shroud, 2007, will be shown on a 53 inch LCD screen. The abstract theme of the film is based on two of her paintings and places itself between form and formlessness, presence and invisibility. The artist’s ideas for the film were conceived with the assistance of Mark Hatchard at Hotbox Studios.

Born in Shiraz, Iran, Shirazeh Houshiary has lived and worked in London since the mid-1970s. She studied at Chelsea School of Art, was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1994 and was awarded the title of Professor at the London Institute in 1997. Her work can be found in major public collections.
