Exhibition Description:

This New York exhibition includes selected works by Barré that will be displayed to coincide with the publication of the most extensive and complete monograph about the artist. Martin Barré’s artistic career spanned much of the latter half of the 20th century. He emerged on the Paris scene in the mid-1950s to go on to exhibit regularly exhibit in museums and galleries across Europe.

Barré’s inventive and sensitive exploration of line, color and form, and the two-dimensional surface is considered to be a singular achievement in the history of abstract painting. Barré’s worked at a time when the ideals of modernism gave way to the new spirit of contemporary art. Martin Barré died in 1993, at the age of 69.

Description:

The monograph is a hardcover book which includes 288 cloth-bound pages, 180 full-page color reproductions, and features a defining essay by Yve-Alain Bois and is being published for the first time in English. It also contains three interviews, two by Catherine Millet and the third by Jean Clay.
