Perth is about to welcome the return of renowned British artist Becky Blair, with Friday, December 5 marking the opening of her latest exhibition, 'between me & you', at Gadfly Gallery in Dalkeith.
The much-anticipated between me & you is a showcase of oil and acrylic pieces, inspired by imagery from her travels across Western Australia .
Themed around melancholy moods, shared secrets, fun and lightness, the exhibition features landscapes, people and animal imagery. The collection is described by Blair herself as one which, "...evokes movement and vibration, using colour and texture to render physical, certain aspects that, in real life, are intangible".
"It's something most people will relate to and why it sits so easily in people's homes, and work spaces," she said.
between me & you is Blair's fourth solo showing in Australia . It follows her hugely successful exhibitions, Backseat Fiction in 2006, which sold out on the opening day; When The Wild Things Bloom in 2004; and Barefoot in the Supermarket in 2003.
Blair's lively and eclectic style, combined with her unique use of vivid colour and dream-like reflections, has seen her highly-sought-after work sold through exhibitions and private commissions in London , New York , Holland , France , Bermuda , India , New Zealand and Australia .
Known as an artist who portrays the beauty in things which may otherwise seem ordinary, British-born Blair draws inspiration from the everyday, and her travels through India , the United Kingdom and her second home, Australia .
According to Blair, none of her paintings are planned.
"They appear organically through a web of under-painting. Lacy pools of watery paint, applied layer upon layer, provide the groundwork for my landscapes and people to appear. They are players in my place of daydreaming, whether experienced or fantasy.
"From the mundane and everyday, one experiences beauty, a glimpsed memory, a nostalgic reverie.
"I aspire to imagery that's fleeting and momentary and has the potential to be poignant. To retain some mystery, and have gaps for the viewer to fill."
According to Gadfly Gallery Director Anna Kwiecinska, Blair is undoubtedly one of the gallery's greatest success stories. As well as representing her nationally, Ms Kwiecinska recently organised Blair's first solo show in London and has taken her work to art shows in Asia and India .
"We don't often come across an emerging artist who attracts such enormous interest from their first exhibition. Coupled with that, is a level of commitment and professionalism which has elevated Becky to an even more select group of artists, whose audience grows with their creativity," Ms Kwiecinska said.
"There is a very special quality and character in Becky's work that appeals to so many people. So much so, we have an ever-growing waiting list of clients hoping to acquire her next work.
"There is a freshness in her paintings, in the way she creates an outsider's vision of moments and places that are familiar to us, ignoring the typical formats often adopted by other artists when depicting landscapes.
"Her paintings have a unique way of drawing the viewer in, and in turn, the viewer draws from them, creating their own story and igniting their memories."
